Veterinary Care for All Types of Birds and Parrots

Birds can make wonderful pets, but before you purchase or adopt a bird give us call to find out about the bird’s behavior patterns, nutritional needs and environmental needs.  The most important thing you can do for your bird after you bring him or her home is to bring your bird to Sawnee Animal Hospital for an examination and consultation with Dr. Esbeck.  He will provide you with the basics about your pet’s lifestyle and ways to mimic that environment as closely as possible.

An Annual Exam is Necessary for Birds

All birds should have at least an annual examination.  The best way to keep your bird healthy is to catch diseases early, before your bird is showing any signs of illness.  Birds are masters at hiding illness and require an experienced avian veterinarian.  Birds live a long time.  Their lifespan will vary greatly with the type of bird and can range from just a few years for our smaller finches to 100+ years for our parrots.

During your bird’s annual examination, we may also recommend additional testing.  We offer full diagnostic screening such as fecal exams, x-rays, blood tests, skin scrapings and biopsy of growths.  An annual examination gives us important baseline records for future reference.

Avian Diets

In general, you need to provide a large variety of fresh food for your bird. Ideally, offer a core diet of an organic, color free avian pellet and a large variety of vegetables daily. Seeds should be limited to treats except for the small birds such as budgies and cockatiels which should have a 50% seed diet. Clean sprouted seeds can also be offered and are a good way of introducing greens to the stubborn eater. Fruits should be limited as a treat only. Offer clean, fresh water at all times. Certain species have additional nutritional needs please call us if you have any questions.

Sick Bird Care

As soon as you detect an illness or believe your bird is not “right”, please bring your bird to us for a thorough physical examination and possible diagnostic work-up including laboratory testing. Your bird will benefit if you learn to recognize a sick bird.  It is common for the first signs of illness in birds to go unnoticed.  The first signs usually include:
