Pocket Pets Need Veterinary Care Too!

Are you the owner of a wonderful pocket pet?  Remember that some of these pets can live up to 15 years or more, so regular veterinary care is important for pocket pets too.  Sawnee Animal Hospital treats all types of pocket pets, including:

An Annual Exam is Necessary for Pocket Pets

All pets, including pocket pets, should have an annual examination by our experienced veterinarian. This is the best way to catch diseases early, before your pet is showing any signs of illness.  These pets are masters at hiding illness, and once they are showing signs of illness they are usually very sick.  Early intervention is critical to the health of your small pet.  Parasite treatment and control is an important part of your pocket pet’s annual exam, along with nutritional, environmental enrichment and behavioral counseling.  During your pet’s exam we may also recommend additional testing as needed for the health of your pet.

Dental Care for Pocket Pets

Some pocket pets require dental care.  Ferrets, for example, can get the same types of dental disease as dogs or cats. We recommend starting to brush your ferret’s teeth early in life to prevent periodontal disease.  Other pets, such as rats and rabbits, need dental exams to be sure their teeth are not overgrown.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Some non-breeding pocket pets, such as rabbits, should be spayed or neutered.  We will discuss spaying or neutering your pet during your annual wellness exam.

Following the Prescribed Diet for Your Particular Pet

Pocket pets have special nutritional needs and we will discuss the right diet for your pet with you.  Most pets need a healthy blend of protein, fats and vegetables.  Diet is extremely important and attention is need so that your pet does not become malnutritioned.  Fresh water should be available to your pet at all times.

Is Your Pocket Pet Experiencing an Illness?

As soon as you detect that your pocket pet seems ill or does not seem “right”, please bring your pet to us as soon as possible for a thorough physical examination.  Remember that early diagnosis means we can begin treating your pet so are quickly on the road to recovery.
