Adult Feline Care

Caring for your cat throughout his or her life is one of the joys of being a cat parent.  Making a commitment to wellness care throughout your cat’s lifetime will keep your cat healthier longer.  Remember that cats are masters at hiding illnesses, so regular veterinary care is an essential component of your cat’s good health and longevity.  We understand that bringing your cat to the veterinarian can be stressful.  At Sawnee Animal Clinic, we are committed to low-stress handling and other techniques so that your cat’s wellness visit may not be a stressful event.  For example, if you bring your cat to us in a top-opening carrier, Dr. Esbeck can perform part of the exam while your cat is inside the safety of the cat carrier.

Adult Feline Veterinary Care Includes:

Comprehensive wellness exams

Your cat’s wellness exams is the time when Dr. Esbeck takes a good look at your cat’s physical health.   During the exam, Dr. Esbeck will discuss any concerns you may have and talk to you about his findings.  Your cat will also receive his or her vaccinations according to your cat’s vaccination program and a heartworm test if necessary.  If your cat has not been tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, a simple blood test is all that is necessary to test your cat.  Hopefully, your cat will text negative, but if not, Dr. Esbeck and staff have recommendations on ways to keep your cat healthy.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations keep your cat healthy by providing a level of protection against preventable diseases.   During your cat’s wellness exam, we will talk with you about the appropriate vaccines for your cat.  Vaccine programs are determined for each cat.
There are core vaccines that all cats need to be healthy:

Non-core vaccines are optional vaccines that should be considered based on the risk that your cat may be exposed:

Dental Care

Dental disease is the most common type of preventable disease we treat at Sawnee Animal Clinic.  Regular dental care, including professional dental cleanings and at-home dental care, will keep your cat’s teeth and gums healthy.  Abscessed teeth, excessive tooth wear, and severe gingivitis are all common in cats.  During your cat’s wellness exam, we will examine your cat’s teeth and mouth for signs of dental disease or other dental problems.  For more about our professional dental care, please visit our dental care page.

Nutrition and Exercise

Nutrition and exercise play an important role in your cat’s health during all stages of his or her life.  During every exam we will make sure your cat is getting the proper nutrition and is at a healthy or optimal weight.   At a healthy weight, you should be able to feel your cat’s ribs through the skin with a thin layer of fat separating the skin from the bones.  Overweight cats are more prone to diseases.  Before you embark on a weight loss program for your cat, please talk to us first.  We can help you help your cat lose weight.  We also carry prescription cat food in our pharmacy for cats with chronic conditions.  These special foods are formulated to nutritionally support.  Exercise is an important part of your cat’s daily routine and can burn calories and stimulate their minds.  Exercise also helps to prevent boredom, helping to alleviate behavior issues stemming from boredom.

General Medical Care

When your cat is sick, we will find the cause of your pet’s illness with help from our in-clinic diagnostic equipment.  We are to diagnose and treat your pet for most medical conditions and injuries.  Should your pet develop a chronic condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease, we will treat the condition with the most current medical or surgical protocols.  We have the experience to diagnose and treat conditions relating to:
