Veterinary Care For Dogs Keep Them Healthy

Caring for your dog throughout his or her life is one of the joys of being a dog parent.  Making a commitment to wellness care throughout your dog’s lifetime will keep your dog healthier longer.  Regular veterinary care is an essential component of your pet’s good health.

Canine Wellness Plans

Every dog needs a wellness care plan. Our canine wellness plans are designed to provide the care your dog needs at an affordable monthly cost to you. Our wellness plans allow your dog to be healthier throughout his or her life, adding years to the time you spend with your dog. Every plan is designed specifically for your pet’s health needs. We have three types of canine wellness plans. For more information, please visit our canine wellness plans page.

Adult Dog Veterinary Care Includes:

Comprehensive wellness exams

Your dog’s wellness exams is the time when Dr. Esbeck takes a good look at your dog’s physical health.   During the exam, Dr. Esbeck will discuss any concerns you may have and talk to you about his findings.  We will also do a heartworm test (annually) and a fecal exam test for parasites.   Your dog will also receive his or her vaccinations according to your dog’s vaccination program.  Please bring a fresh fecal sample (less than 12 hours old) to your dog’s wellness exam.   For older dogs, we may need a urine sample.  Please DO NOT allow them to urinate outside before their visit.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations keep your dog healthy by providing a level of protection against preventable diseases.   During your pet’s wellness exam, we will talk with you about the appropriate vaccines for your pet.  Vaccine programs are determined for each pet based upon the pet’s breed, age and anticipated lifestyle.

There are core vaccines that all dogs need to be healthy:

Non-core vaccines are optional vaccines that should be considered based on the risk that your dog may be exposed:

Parasite Prevention

Parasites can be both internal and external.  For example, heartworm disease is a preventable disease caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that can live in dogs’ heart, lungs and associated blood vessels.  It causes severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs of the body.  Heartworm disease affects dogs, but can also affect cats and ferrets.  External parasites, such as fleas and ticks, can also affect your family.  During your dog’s wellness exam, we will examine your dog for parasites and perform diagnostic testing as needed by your dog, including a blood testing for heartworm and fecal exam.

Dental Care

Dental disease is the most common type of preventable disease we treat at Sawnee Animal Clinic.  Regular dental care, including professional dental cleanings and at-home dental care, will keep your dog’s teeth and gums healthy.  Abscessed teeth, excessive tooth wear, severe gingivitis and fractured teeth are all common in dogs.  During your dog’s wellness exam, we will examine your dog’s teeth and mouth for signs of dental disease or other dental problems such as cracked teeth.  For more about our professional dental care, please visit our dental care page.

Nutrition and Exercise

Nutrition and exercise play an important role in your dog’s health during all stages of his or her life.  During every exam we will make sure your dog is getting the proper nutrition and is at a healthy or optimal weight.   At a healthy weight, you should be able to feel your dog’s ribs through the skin with a thin layer of fat separating the skin from the bones.  Overweight dogs are more prone to diseases such as heart disease, thyroid disease or other metabolic disorders.   We can help you help your dog lose weight.  We also carry prescription dog food in our pharmacy for dogs with chronic conditions.  These special foods are formulated to nutritionally support.  Exercise is an important part of your dog’s daily routine and can burn calories and stimulate their minds.  Exercise also helps to prevent boredom, helping to alleviate behavior issues stemming from boredom.

General Medical Care

When your dog is sick, we will find the cause of your pet’s illness with help from our in-clinic diagnostic equipment.  We are to diagnose and treat your pet for most medical conditions and injuries.  Should your pet develop a chronic condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease, we will treat the condition with the most current medical or surgical protocols.  We have the experience to diagnose and treat conditions relating to:

Microchipping

We recommend all dogs be microchipped, and we can microchip your dog during any wellness exam.  Microchipping your dog is a virtually painless procedure where we use a needle to place a little chip under your dog’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades.  For more information about microchipping your dog, please visit our microchip page.
